12th May, 2006
Most of our group arrived in Accra, Ghana late on 05 March, 2006. On 06 March, many of us attended the Independence Day celebration. Ghana became an independent nation on 06 March, 1957. For us, the rest of the time since the Independence Day celebration has been spent in classes, getting used to the place, meeting people, trying new things, and relaxing. Many people think we will be seeing lots of animals in Africa, but Accra is urban. Up until today, I had not seen any animals that were larger than my dog Wendy. A couple of the sheep I saw today were taller than her, but other than that, I've only seen lizards, chickens, a cat, and a couple small dogs. One of the things that I'm really seeking and treasuring when I find it is unity. Unity among other people in my group, unity among me and other residents of Accra, and unity with people in the States from whom I am far away. Peace, love, and unity!

2006-03-08. I try Guinness Malta for the first time at Asanka Locals restaurant. Though I had never heard of it before, it's nothing too exotic. It seems that Malta is simply pre-fermentation product. I thought it was okay, but I think I'll stick to water mostly.

2006-03-11. View from the bus on a city tour of Accra. Some people are for ROPAB, and some people obviously are not. ROPAB is a bill dealing with voting rights for Ghanaian citizens who live in other countries. As with any bill, there is debate over what exactly the consequences of the bill are. I've been trying to understand ROPAB by talking to Ghanaians and reading media sources.

2006-03-11. A trash pile near a weaving shop. Trash is another issue which has come up in public discussion, discussion among our group, and news media. Trash is often discarded on the ground in Accra. This is a big problem, but it's more complex than telling people to throw things in trash cans.
