SUBURBAN VIKING NEWS BOX ARCHIVE:
28 April, 2008 | All Shook Up
We've had some tectonic rumblings lately. I swear it's not my fault. Um yeah, so, a recent Jay Smooth video was mentioned on Fox News cable channel. Too bad they said that he was Soulja Boy. Get a clearer glimpse of Jay Smooth's videos here.
In other news, I just found out that Five Iron's website has been revived. Also, Deepspace5 is droppin' an EP to fund-raise for their new full-length album coming out someday soon. Check it!
29 March, 2008 | Wade in the Water
Lots of rains lately and flooding in the St. Louis region. It ain't always easy bouncing back from that. In other news, Derrick Ashong found himself in a spotlight again recently, this time speaking about Sen. Obama, democracy, and change. Check out the NYTimes piece here or one of the YouTube videos here. P.S. For the record, I've met the guy before, and I don't buy anyone's claims that this was set up or scripted.
04 March, 2008 | Moving along
The killdeer returned to the St. Louis Metro East this past weekend. Also, there have been a lot of school closings lately. Heavy winter precipitation abounds.
05 March, 2007 | youth in charge disciplinary report
Wade in the water, children. The kildeer have returned. Independence Day in the Republic of Ghana tomorrow! I hope to celebrate here in the States.
27 December, 2006 | Why can't we seem to keep it together?
I've got some good music recently, but there's lots of bad music out there. Beware. Other news? I would like to point out that WAL-MART is making a move to expand its Glen Carbon store into a WAL-MART Superstore. I'm working on finding out details. I'm also working on hanging with fam and friends and working on research.
22 November, 2006 | Give Thanks
Augustana groups went to on a service trip to Indianapolis and a School of the Americas protest trip in the past seven days. I was with the group in Indy. Mike Allred seems to be on the move again with new Madman stuff coming out through Image. I wonder how the Golden Plates project is coming along. Have a gracious Thanksgiving!
07 November, 2006 | You know what time it is...
It's time to vote, kiddos. Will there be much change in federal, state, and local politics? Time will tell. Also, the term is winding down here at Augustana College. A recent Argus/Dispatch article features Augustana recycling. I hope our recycling efforts continue and get stronger.
10 October, 2006 | I've seen the darkest things crawling inside of me
Changes on Augie's campus this year have required some adjustments and adaptation. Some benefits have resulted while other things have created strife. New things are coming out from Switchfoot.com as the new album release dates nears. And I hear that Wendell Berry is alive and well. Some Augie-ites saw him this past weekend.
02 September, 2006 | we're gonna ride this place into the ground
I'm at college again in the Island of Rock. First-years are moving into the campus now. The student body is adjusting to changes in rules, housing, etc.
14 August, 2006 | Diego rockers are still at it
San Diego-based band Switchfoot has a previously unreleased track called "Daylight to Break" available online. I don't have an iPod or a Dell Jukebox or anything like that, so I'm glad to see that you can still get music online via bands' websites. As for me, I'm spending time in Edwardsville for a few more days before going to Michigan.

06 August, 2006 | back to the burbs
I moved out of the Main household in St. Louis, and now I'm home for a day or so. Soon I'll be on the move again, helping others move and seeing people and attending a wedding. What's up with Castro? I'm not sure. He stepped down for a bit, but he might be coming back, I'm not sure. Oh, Fidel. You were my hero when you were more of a revolutionary and less of a dictator.
28 July, 2006 | hot town, summer in the city...
Some places in St. Louis are still without power, and there have been a couple deaths related to the heat and electricity. As for me, my time in North St. Louis is growing short... one week left.
22 July, 2006 | Restoring the Powerless
A nearly 72-hour electrical power outage just ended for the part of the city of St. Louis in which I reside. The temperature was also very high in the city for a couple days, but now it has cooled down considerably. Some earthquakes and tsunamis have been hitting Java and other island areas lately. Also, there is relatively increased violence in the Middle East right now.
04 July, 2006 | Happy Birthday America
I've been back in the States for around a month now. I am living in St. Louis at the moment but am visiting the MetroEast every once in a while. I'm getting into city life, doing lots of physical labor (at work and at home), and taking plenty of time to read and write. Someday I will get around to making much needed updates to this site. Until then, keep it Pony!
11 June, 2006 | I'm PRO*PAIN, where do you stand on the issue?
I'm in the U.S.A. now. I'm waking up new every day. Re-entering this American life is a cool process. I have realized how weak and vulnerable I actually am, and I'm trying to be aware of and humble about that. I am weak, but God is strong. In other news, 533 days overdue, mars ill's PRO*PAIN is here. I bought it and some of Sev's, Sivion's, and others' music from Sphere of Hip Hop. Delicious. P.S. Also check out Playdough and Dust on The June 9th Logan Show - click here.
April 30, 2006 | I Bless the Rains Down in Africa
I'm in Africa. It has been rainy some days in Kumasi in April. It's nice. That's about all for now. We're off to the north tomorrow.
February 26, 2006 | GHANA GO!
Augustana's Thomas Tredway library was recently announced as the winner of the 2006 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award. Rock on. As for me, I'm living in this bittersweet existence of preparing to leave my country for 3 months, and I'm realizing how much I've got here... how much I'm leaving behind. There is also so much ahead of me. Life is often an adventure whether at home or abroad. See you around.
January 25, 2006 | is this the new year?
Madness swirls around me and inside me. In other news, two weeks of spiritual focus on Augie's campus will conclude at the end of this week. Only a month and a couple weeks left before I go to Africa. Good onya, mates.
January 09, 2006 | the grass is never greener
I'm in the QCA. I'm not quite as disciplined as I'd like to be, but I'm striving. The Darfur and Sudanese conflicts are still going on.
December 19, 2005 | myfacespacejournalster.com
I'm in the STL/ILLside now. I recently joined myspace, making me a user on facebook, myspace, livejournal, and friendster. So whenever I criticize online communities, know that I'm a part of them. MxPx and Dust and Listener have all created special releases for this Christmas. Also rare treats are for sale at marsill.com. Mike Allred's site is revamped and updated!
December 09, 2005 | Savior of the fools
I've only got one week left in Rock Island before I hit the road again. Misch and Byrnes left town before me. I'm trying to follow a bit more disciplined lifestyle this term, and it's working out so far. In world news, the Montreal 2005 meeting just finished up.
November 24, 2005 | and the beat goes on
I've been to Urbana, Minneapolis, Rock Island, and now Edwardsville. I'm hoping to make a trip up to DeKalb and maybe Naperville before I return to Augie in a couple days. Happy Thanksgiving y'all. I give thanks for the things I have and the things I don't have. And I'm grateful for all the people in my life. Praise Jehovah.
November 08, 2005 | mad world
Rioting and civil unrest in France have been going on for 12 days. WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price is coming out soon. It may be good or bad, but it should be interesting. The Darfur conflict continues. And Augie's Fall 2005/2006 term is in its tenth week.
* here is a Wikipedia article about the Darfur conflict
October 27, 2005 | keep on the path
The Darfur region of the Sudan is still in terrible turmoil. The White Sox won the World Series. The Listener is on his Tour of Homes. There are lots of good performances going on at Augie this upcoming weekend. And I'm going traveling to Elk Grove and Madison, WI this weekend to see lots of people including Nickel Creek.
* here is a Wikipedia article about the Darfur conflict
October 09, 2005 | look up to the stars
The marsill website is back in action. Also, come check out Augie's Talent Showcase in Centennial at 7:00 PM on Wednesday Oct. 12. There is a wide variety of good acts lined up including the IV Worship Team and Danielle, Ashley, and myself. Hurricane Stan and an earthquake in Kashmir are devastating lives and landscapes. Also, the U.S. Supreme Court changes as the 2005-2006 justices take their seats.
October 02, 2005 | I've got two cups and a handful of string
I've been checking out lots of live music lately. AGAPÉ, Parish Festival, Chrash, The 1900's, Love Dogs, Twistyr, etc. Also, more hurricane damage is occurring. On campus, I'm dancing, singing, listening, talking, reading, sleeping, and more. Lots going on, but all I have to say is be aware y'all. Be alive and aware.
September 14, 2005 | living through the wounds to healing
Remembering September 11th, our nation lives through the wounds of the hurricane aftermath as suffering occurs internationally as well. The starting place for healing comes when the hurt is fully felt and recognized. As for me, I'm meeting new people, becoming more engaged in previous relationships and activities, and taking good classes. I'm being challenged to be aware. Also, "Nothing is Sound" came in my mail yesterday. It's tight, but newcomers may want to check out previous albums to know where it is coming from lyrically.
August 28, 2005 | upheaval
Pray and hold the southeastern U.S. near your heart as Hurricane Katrina strikes. As destruction looms on the horizon, I know new growth will spring up, and I wish for endurance, survival, and hope for the people, the animals, and the land. As for me, I've touched my past, present, and future in the past week or so. I've traveled the southern suburbs of Chicago, spent a week at IV Chapter Camp in Cedarville, MI (in the UP), tried new things, met or became reacquainted with people, and sought truth and love. How will all this be manifested in my life? Well, we'll just have to wait and see won't we?
August 09, 2005 | more news
John Garang, the Sudanese leader and peacemaker, passed away over a week ago and his funeral was held recently. As many mourn Garang's death, Salva Kiir, another SPLA leader, is named First Vice President of Sudan in his place. Also, Peter Jennings, the ABC new anchor, died on August 7th of lung cancer.
* John Garang profile on Wikipedia.org
August 01, 2005 | Garang is dead
Many sources confirm that John Garang, the First VP of the Republic of Sudan and the President of South Sudan, died in an aircraft crash along with several others on July 30th. Details vary among sources, but Garang's death seems to be certain. News of the loss of Garang sends major ripples throughout Sudan and the surrounding area. Riots have sprung up in some areas and many mourn the loss of this leader.
July 26, 2005 | survivin' the summer heat
The Madison County Fair is going on this week. My sis and her cat won some ribbons yesterday. This past weekend, I was introduced to Ian and Teague Alexy and their music thanks to Carolyn. They played at Theo's Java Club on Saturday night. In Sudan, SPLM leader John Garang was sworn in as the nation's Vice President. This is a big deal because Sudan hasn't had a southern or Christian VP in the past 25 years or so and because it is a crucial step in ending some Sudanese conflict.
June 30, 2005 | Don't you worry, dear
Teen Night 2005 happened on June 28th. Brisara(h)tops, A Work in Progress, and Kahill performed. If you missed it, I think all three groups will be playing in the future, so fear not. I got the new Deepspace5 album a bit ago. Likin' it. The marsill web site is still nothing more than a sign-up for the mailing list. But expect PRO*PAIN soon. MxPx and Shakira also dropped new albums this month. Haven't checked either one out yet.
June 3, 2005 | We're so much smaller than we think we are
Just got back from a good time in the QCA. I was visiting my girl Carolyn (helping her move, etc.) and saw Brad and some others as well. Visiting links on my web site today I was floored to see all the activity going on with marsill, deepspace5, the listener, and others. Check it out yourself, and I'll fill ya in more later. Also, I saw "Crash" while in the QC. It was masterfully done. A great film. Oh yeah, and there are two new Workings of Plants films coming out around now.
*deepspace5.com - gorgeous new site
May 22, 2005 | Sunrise, Sunset
I resoundingly applaud the Brew and View's new Rocket Theater. Go to it often. "Hat McGee and the Potato Man" was shown at the Sloughdance Festival on May 3rd. Brad Palmgren's "The Metaphysical Man and the Exodus of Reason" also showed that night along with several other fine films. Seth spotted John Reuben in a gas station on April 25th and talked with him briefly. Reuben's new album called "THE BOY vs THE CYNIC" is coming out June 21, 2005.
*ReubonicPlague.com - Your Source for all things John Reuben!
April 24, 2005 | Git Ready
MxPx has a new album called "Panic" that is supposed to hit stores June 7th. And marsill's PROPAIN should be here this summer too. I saw "Dr. Strangelove" last night. Interesting flick. Augie Gospel Choir show is May 7th at 7 in Wallenberg. And the Teen Tuesday event is June 28th at the EPL.
April 04, 2005 | Summertime Scrapple
The UNYK show was off the hook. Big props to my boy Feger and all involved. WAUG Open Mic Night was cool too. It all went down April 2, this past Saturday. Ammon and I had fun playing, and I think most everyone who played, sang, or listened enjoyed the event. Look for more performances in the future, cuz you can't stop the music.
March 20, 2005 | Somebody told me that the band is breaking up...
Sounds like Carrie Nations is breaking up sometime in the near future. I missed out on the one opportunity that I had to see them this past summer. Ah well, at least I have their "Be Still" cd. In other music news, marsill's website is still down, but PROPAIN is slated to come out this summer. There are only about 9 more weeks of my sophomore year at Augustana. Time flies.
February 15, 2005 | This world is mean
I've heard "Hotel Rwanda" is worth seeing. The Rwandan genocide that occurred in the 1990's was a horrific event. I'm only learning more about it now, a decade later. Speaking of horrific brutality, female gential mutilation (FGM) is a reality in our modern world (read article below for more info). I saw the Vagina Monologues performed recently. It made me wonder about the widespread abuse of women and of our fellow humans in general. How can we do this?

January 20, 2005 | WOW! WHY! WOW!
Woah, it's like I stepped into a different universe when coming back from break. One reason I think it's a different universe is that every conversation is now peppered with Napolean Dynamite quotes. Regardless, the only news right now from this end of the online world is that I am authoring my LiveJournal once again, instead of Brad. In other news, space fog has been documented by telescopes and other instruments.
* SPACE FOG!!!
January 04, 2005 | "You got to roll with the punches to get to what's real"
We've been listening to "Jump" in my dorm room a lot. Though it meant less days in the MetroEast, my weekend of travel put me in a good place. I visited with friends and family, reminisced, and excogitated. Marsill's "Pirate Radio" is well worth the $15 I spent on it. Keep your ears open for "PROPAIN." As far as movies go, "Spanglish" and "Life Aquatic" are worth seeing.
December 25, 2004 | Things Fall Apart
I'm currently reading a Chinua Achebe book by the above title. I've been visiting with friends and family from the MetroEast. I'm in the area for four more days, then off to Northeastern Illinois, and back to the QC. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you.
December 19, 2004 | Christmas parties galore
There have been more holiday parties in the past week than I can count on one hand. Marx managed to pop up in my third class last week. I'm in Edwardsville for two weeks now and am planning on lots of reading and other fun activities.
December 12, 2004 | a little bit of everything
As of last week, John Kufuor was re-elected to the Presidency of Ghana. I saw Handel's Messiah today and enjoyed it. From the grave, Karl Marx has visited me in two of my courses and other areas of my life. "Propain", marsill's new album, has been delayed further, but there is good news. Their website can tell you more.

December 05, 2004 | SPACE FOG!!!
The most recent Workings of Plants film, "Mars, Bringer of War," has been out for a week or so now. I'm back at school starting a new term, learning about social theory, Africa, and certainty/uncertainty. I'm striving to be more studious this term. Also, Brad is authoring my LiveJournal for the time being.
November 23, 2004 | Living between
I went on a service trip to St. Louis this past weekend. It was inspiring, and I had fun and bonded with folks. Workings of Plants flexed its creative muscles again today and made a bold new movie, to be primiered soon. I saw "The Incredibles" last night. Liked it a lot.
November 14, 2004 | Breathe Slow
In between papers and exams, I'm able to relax and reflect. I saw "Shaun of the Dead" last night and listened to the "LAST ONE OUT OF THE QUAD CITIES, TURN OUT THE LIGHTS" radio play today. And I've just been taking it easy. Gonna be heading back to Edwardsville on Thursday, then spending time in STL and Naperville over the next week and a half after that. Take care y'all.
November 07, 2004 | Southbound on 55
Jake's on his way back to Edwardsville right now. We had an alternately lazy and boisterous weekend. In other news, Mike Allred introduces a comic book series depicting the Book of Mormon. The series is called "The Golden Plates," and of course Laura Allred colors the books. From interviews that I've read, Mike sounds very energetic and dedicated to this project.
* Mike Allred's message board has current info and discussion
October 31, 2004 | Northbound on 55
I went home this weekend and saw my family, my neighbors, my church friends, Jake, and some SIUE peeps, as well as the new developments going on in the area. There were good and bad happenings with everyone and everything, but I wouldn't trade that place for anything in the world. I'm back at Augie now, beginning Week 9 of the 10-week trimester. Oh, and I've decided to post on LiveJournal once again. Fun for the whole family.
October 24, 2004 | This weekend was brought to you by... gluttony
This past Friday I watched "Super Size Me." I would recommend it to everyone. Yesterday (Saturday) I won a medal for completing the Beefeater challenge at Prime Quarter. After you learn more about these two things, you may wonder if the movie had no effect on me. It certainly did. And so did eating over two pounds of beef. See the movie. Visit the restaurant. As a tie-in, watch "The Meatrix" as well. We need to learn more about our food.
*The Meatrix
October 14, 2004 | pushed back
I recorded a song this week, but it's unable to be rendered to mp3 format at this time, so it may be a while before I upload new music onto here. So push that event back in your mind. Also push back your anticipation of the MARSILL album. Looks like it could be until February 2005 before it hits stores. As manCHILD and dust said: hold tight.
*visit marsill.com for more info on their album
October 11, 2004 | new marsill album cominatcha
Marsill is releasing PROPAIN, their new album, sometime in the future. Gotee Records has a great pre-order deal for y'all, and there is going to be one wild ruckus of a release party in ATL following the album release. The previous release date has been pushed back due to some problems with production, etc. In any case, keep your ears and minds open for PROPAIN.
*visit marsill.com for more info
September 21, 2004 | Back at school
I've decided to stop writing in my Livejournal indefinitely, so don't check it for new posts. In case you hadn't noticed, I'm back at Augustana now. In the near future (let's say the next couple months), you can expect some new songs to be uploaded on here, as well as more writings and links. Enjoy.
July 25, 2004 | More changes
For some reason, I can't remove the annoying presence of the pop-up Tripod search boxes on the side of the browser. So you'll just have to minimize them as much as possible or click the "x." This summer has seen the creation of three new Horrell movies thus far. Hem and his family are moving to New Jersey soon. Also, Edwardsville has more new subdivisions than you can shake a stick at. As far as I know, Sara D. is on tour with What the Kids Want now, and Eric M. is or was on tour with B.A.A. And tomorrow is the last day to turn in reading logs at the library!
July 18, 2004 | Farewell
Teen Tuesday went well with Chen, Yusuf, Hem, Dave D., and I playing at one time or another in the first set. Sara D. played a few songs of her own. The last set was the reunion of Skatter, an encore farewell show. Speaking of farewell, Calibretto and Bleach are doing their farewell tours at the end of this summer and early fall. Check 'em out.
*visit the websites of Calibretto and Bleach to learn more
June 08, 2004 | Library Show!!!
Summer doldrums give their two-week notice today. Get ready to rock. The annual Teen Tuesday show is happening on June 22 at 7:00 PM. The tentative list of performers includes Skatter, Tony Chen, and Yusuf Daneshayar. Check back with me for firmer plans later.
May 11, 2004 | Non-stop Computer Access
Since this is the last week of classes this term at Augie, the Olin lab is open 24 hours. So I'm staying here into the wee hours of the morning, and that translates into me actually updating the website! **GASP!!** You can check the update page for any evidence of that. But I wanted to say that Scarlet Crush has a new full-length album out. I haven't heard any of the new songs, but their last cd was catchy and insightful. Also, What the Kids Want has an album out on SDM records. You can preview a couple of the mp3's from that on their site.
Over the Bandwidth Limit
First off, it's cool that people are downloading rhe G-men song off the site. Unfortunately, I found out that there is a low hourly bandwidth limit on my site, meaning that if there is too much data downloaded from the site, it will shut down for a couple of hours. This isn't really a big deal, but if it becomes annoying, just email me and I'll deal with it.
THE G-MEN
Hem finished school at EHS in December of 2002. I started to make a song for him because I thought he was leaving for Florida then. A year later, Hem finally did leave for California, and then Florida. I finished the "g-men" song and gave it to him before he left. It's about bowling, crazy kids, and, most of all, Hem.
*in case you didn't hear it at Hem's going away party, open this link for the song and this link for the lyrics
December 20th, 2003 | Hem leaves and Jared Fogle returns
An emotional day. Hem Parikh's last day in Edwardsville before he goes to California and then college in Florida. The fictional Jared Fogle's return from the insane asylum and to the silver screen. I wish Hem the best in his new endeavors, and I thank him for shining in the role of Santa in "Jared Fogle Saves Christmas." Peace.
University Dean and Egyptian Expatriates to Sue ALL THE JEWS IN THE WORLD
Okay, so the Jewish people stole Egyptian gold before their exodus from Egypt. Over 2000 years later, Dr. Hilmi, the Dean of the Law Faculty at al-Zaqaziq University, and some Egyptian expatriates in Switzerland want that money back.
*Excerpts from an interview with Dr. Hilmi can be found here.
Paipo, CDs, Tours, radio show, films, and more
Paipo is making a comeback. John Reuben's new album "Professional Rapper" came out on Dec. 2, 2003 and Mars Ill's new album "backbreakanomics" has been out for a few weeks. I played both of their singles on my new radio show at WAUG with Seth. The show is on Thursday nights from 11 PM - 1 AM on Fridays (only airs on weeks when we have classes). You can listen to it online at http://listen.to/waug. Mars Ill is done with their big tour, and they're back in Atlanta. MxPx will be going on tour again shortly. Last, but not least, Bradford has a new movie that you can check out here.

WAUG Open Mic Night
Well, if you weren't in the Augustana JAVA 101 location on Saturday, November 1st, 2003 from 7:30 to midnight, you missed the WAUG Open Mic Night. Crystal played a few of her songs. Seth, Ammon, and I played some songs including a Last Kiss/Muppet Babies/Blue Moon medley. Byrnes was highly comedic as well as poignant. Lots of varying degrees of talented people shared the stage, including a band called Junction 18 who was trying to make their way back home from a cancelled leg of a tour. They weren't getting paid for this performance, but someone was collecting for gas money for them, and we bought some merch.

Comics and Amusing ads
I added a comics section to the site. View it here. Also, it appears that the ads at the bottom of my pages are designed to relate to the content of the pages. It's interesting to see what keywords the ads pull from.
Changes on the site
I changed the ad setting from pop-ups to banners on the page. Partly because Tripod was adding banners to the bottom of the pages anyway. There are still some pop-ups that appear, and I know that's annoying, but then again, I'm not paying for this site.

Also, I am gradually changing the overall look of the site.
Cool show in Colinsville
On Aug. 24 at 7:00 PM Chain Reaction, What the Kids Want, Hyphen-O, and I played at the Isle of U in Collinsville. It was a good time.

New York City Plans to Open Gay Public High School
After running for 20 years as a private institution, Harvey Milk School will be reopening in September with assisted funding from the City. Some supporters claim that GLBTs (gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders) need a safe place to go to school, where they will not be harassed or abused. Critics say that GLBTs should not be schooled separately.
